How Energy Efficient is Your Home?

EPA's Home Energy Yardstick provides a simple assessment of your home's annual energy use compared to similar homes. By answering a few basic questions about your home, you can get:

  • Your home's Home Energy Yardstick score (on a scale of 1 to 10);
  • Insights into how much of your home's energy use is related to heating and cooling versus other everyday uses like appliances, lighting, and hot water;
  • Links to guidance from ENERGY STAR on how to increase your home's score, improve comfort, and lower utility bills; and
  • An estimate of your home's annual carbon emissions.

Painting and Air Quality

The Village Park Eco Home will be painted with paints  labeled as having no VOCs- Volatile Organic Compounds.

According to the EPA, "Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs are organic chemical compounds whose composition makes it possible for them to evaporate under normal indoor atmospheric conditions of temperature and pressure."

"Indoor VOCs react with the indoor ozone even at concentrations below public health standards. The chemical reactions produce sub-micron sized particles and harmful by-products that may be associated with adverse health effects in some sensitive populations."

Federal VOC limits are now set at 250 grams per liter for flat paints and 380 grams per liter for others.  Some states like California and some regions have lowered the VOC levels for paints that can be legally sold in their areas.

Since there may be some VOCs in the paint you use, the LEED standard is to ventilate new construction for two weeks before moving in.

According to a recent Consumer Reports rating of paints,

the best zero VOC options are by Behr.  According to CR each, "...budget priced paint is sold at Home Depot and is very environmentally friendly (Zero VOCs)"

#5 in Satin and Eggshell category:

Behr Premium Plus Satin Enamel Price: $27.

#6 in Flat and Matte category:

Behr Premium Plus Flat Enamel Price: $25.

#4 in Semi-gloss category:

Behr Premium Plus Semi-Gloss Enamel Price: $29.

Energy Efficiency Legislation Pending

Energy Efficiency Incentives - The Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act

Click here to read more about the bill.

S. 1392 is a bipartisan bill and reportedly has a significant majority of support in the Senate. The Senate has not considered a comprehensive energy bill since 2007, and Democrat and Republican leaders have shared their support for S. 1392. This bill remains pending consideration by the full Senate.
